An Autobiographical Narrative Inquiry of Self-Awareness of an Art Therapist

|
This study aimed to explore the process and meanings of the self-awareness of the researcher as an art therapist through autobiographical inquiry. The research data consisted of the researcher's paintings, journals, interview data, and transcripts of individual counseling. The method of narrative inquiry was applied to recount the process, meanings, and significance of the researcher's self-awareness. The experience stories about awareness were expressed as follows: ‘stories kept hidden in my heart’, ‘stepping forth into the world’, ‘living as a mother’, and ‘becoming whole and complete as a person through awareness.’ The meanings of the experience of awareness can be summarized as follows. First, through a deeper inquiry into myself, I gained an insight into my relationship with myself and the relationship between me and others. Second, through the experience of self-awareness, I became able to see myself as I am and others as they are and have relationships with others as ‘an art therapist’ or as ‘the whole me’. Third, I recognized that all the elements created as a result of my existence belong to me and the world changes according to my mind. As a result, I became aware that the art therapist's ‘personhood’ is an important element in the researcher's life and in the scene of art therapy. In addition, through this study, I gained awareness of the fact that it is important to find and solve my unresolved tasks and live as the subject of my life. I realized that art therapists are required to gain self-awareness and have a deep understanding of themselves prior to conducting therapy for the client and that the art therapist's self-awareness is a crucial element in art therapy.
